It’s 2005 …

… why do we still have ass software?

Lately, I’ve been getting more and more frustrated with Evolution. I run Linux on my desktop at work. We run Exchange. So I have but no choice to run Evolution. In general, Evolution is probably some sort of open source icon or something. But there are just a couple things that make me want to pound my head against the wall.

  1. The biggest pisser: why does search suck so much? It’s gotten to the point where I can’t find anything. “Hey look, I’ve got folders! Use my folders to organize your mail!” Months later, you’re looking for some elusive email. You type something in the search field, hit the button, and (after a long ass time) you get some results… for the current folder. You think, “Nope, guess it wasn’t in this folder. Could be related to this subject, so maybe it’s in this other folder.” You repeat the process over and over until you either find what you’re looking for or you give up. Why have folders when it breaks makes it impossible to search? Or why have searches that don’t work with folders? Can you imagine if desktop file searching app of choice (mdfind, locate, Google, whatever) could only search one directory at a time?
  2. Slow as sin loading of a folder. Shouldn’t it be caching or something? And if there is only one new email in the folder, it should not take tens of seconds to update the list. How long can it take to grab all the new headers since whenever?
  3. Adding multiple attachments to an email is broken. I can shift-click and choose a group of files. But for some reason I can’t ctrl-click and choose this file and that file. I hope someone just forgot to pass some flag to what looks like a common dialog control
  4. It stopped understanding meeting requests. Annoying, but I’ll cut them some slack there. It could potentially have been a Microsoft thing with Exchange or something. But I would like it to work again.
  5. GAL doesn’t work for me. Another one I’m willing to cut some slack on. Again could be some random Microsoft thing. So the last two don’t really count.

I’m tempted to write an email client.. no, not really. Bleah.
