Switch! Again.
Ehhh. Again, not quite a switch, more of an “in addition”. And “switch” is so last year.
I’ve bitched about using Evolution (because we use Exchange at work). Well, it was the IT people’s turn to bitch. They were migrating to a new Exchange server, and the process died on my mail box. After some contortions they succeeded, and along the way decided that I should have a Windows machine to run Outlook.
I gladly accepted because it was getting to the point where email was beginning to get overwhelming. After some tweaking, I’ll probably stick with Windows as my desktop machine but still do most of my development on the Linux machine sitting right next to it. I’m not an OS fanatic one way or another, but Evolution was becoming an obstacle for me. And now I don’t have to wait all day for OpenOffice. And I can actually test our client apps. And this desktop machine actually has more RAM than the Linux machine.
A couple of things that I installed immediately to make life bearable:
- FireFox – web browser
- Cygwin – Unix userspace for Windows
- PuTTYcyg – terminal app
- VirtuaWin – virtual desktops
Bonus tip: ClearType doesn’t seem to do anything with bitmap fonts. And while ClearType is great for reading/web browsing, it drives me crazy with my terminals. I dug up some a bitmapped “programming” font to use with PuTTYcyg. Yeah! Smooth fonts for webbrowsing and sharp fonts for my terminal.
