Get Rich Quick
One of my “not quite get rich quick” ideas is online bookmark storage. Of course, the reason I’m not inclined to pursue it is because the market is just packed with competitors (delicious, Furl, Blinklist, Yahoo My Web). Competitors with a head start and most probably have more resources.
But the reason I’m inclined to pursue it, is because none of these fulfill my needs. I want an online replacement for my bookmarks. Everybody else seems to focus on “social” while I’m more interested in “bookmarking”.
The main thing that is wrong with these sites is information density. In the same space, the native bookmark manager can show twice as many bookmarks as any of these bookmarking sites. 90% of the time, I’m going to open my bookmarks, find the one I’m looking for and click on it. And, boy it’s going to be a pain in the ass, if I can only see 5 links at a time. I’m thinking much of the time I should be able to get where I want to be in two clicks (open bookmarks, click on bookmark) or maybe three clicks (open bookmarks, click on category/label/tag, click on bookmark).
On a related note: Blinklist seems to suffer from gratuitous AJAX. Sure AJAX is hip and all, but “Web 2.0″ isn’t about using as much AJAX as possible. Everything in moderation. I’m not sure if there is any reason why paging through a handful of results at a time should be implemented with AJAX. And I could probably do without some of the nifty transitions.
