Digg versus Slashdot
I’m a big Internet/information addict. And when I’m bored, I get annoyed that my favorite sites don’t update frequently enough.
This is where Slashdot came in. It doesn’t provide too much in original content (some interviews and Ask Slashdot, I guess) but that OK. It is more of a content/news/interesting link aggregator. with user commentary. Of course, sometime I’m really bored, and even Slashdot isn’t enough.
Digg is the “new Slashdot” (or something to that effect). But instead of editors, users promote articles to the front page. Digg seems to have a slightly “links posted on front page” rate than Slashdot and you can always “digg” through links that haven’t/won’t make the front page. As such, the quality of Digg links/stories vary a bit more than Slashdot links/stories, but that “OK” because there are no editors or something. I give it the benefit of the doubt because I just attribute it to the process. I get more good links and more bad/uninteresting links too.
One thing that definitely annoys me about Digg though, is that the average technical knowledge of the users commenting seems to be lower than Slashdot’s. It’s gotten to the point that I think I’m just going to stop reading the comments on Digg. They annoy me more than they contribute to the link/story. I guess with Digg, the focus is on the link whereas on Slashdot there is more focus on the discussion (in addition to the link).
I’ll keep going to both, but no more reading comments on Digg.
