Christmas presents

So what did you get for Christmas?

The big thing I got was a Canon EOS ELAN 7E from my girlfriend. WOW. Did not expect that, and I think she did too much. I know nothing about photography, but I guess I can learn now.

The coolest thing about the camera is the Eye Controlled Focus. By simply looking at a focus point (through the viewfinder) the camera can tell where to focus. Seems to work pretty well.

The least cool feature (for me) would be that it is film. I already have an Elph S110. I enjoy the instant gratification and knowing instantly whether it was a good shot or not. Not that I ever go, “Ooh, that was a crappy shot. *DELETE*”. So I guess film wouldn’t be too big of a difference (except that whole waiting for it to be developed thing.

But it should complement the Elph well. I have a couple of gripes with it (or consumer digital cameras in general).

  1. Generally a slow “shutter” speed. Poor for pictures with a lot of motion.
  2. Poor night time pictures.
  3. Err.. I can’t think of the others now, maybe I literally only had a couple.

The EOS is definitely better at both.

Now the hard part is finding something worth taking pictures of. I was didn’t use it for the Christmas party, because.. well, it didn’t seem “worth” it. I have this wierd idea that I should be taking some glamorous artsy shots or landscape shots with it. That and I’m probably slightly embarrassed that the camera so greatly outweighs my skill (or talent). I guess I should just pull it out and just take pictures. And more pictures. That’s probably the best way to get better at taking good pictures, to learn more about the camera, and to get over any embarrassment about using it.
