Further Thoughts on My Unemployed State
Recently I’ve been musing about being unemployed. I have no doubt that I am good at what I do. But this (over-)confidence hasn’t gotten me a job yet.
I’ve always been a fan of “alternative” technology. I guess I’m part of the computer hippy culture. Free this, open that, anti-Microsoft, etc. So most of my skills are in non-Microsoft technologies such as: UNIX, Linux, Java, etc. Perhaps I’ve been wrong? There are certainly many postings looking for Java or UNIX, but seems like they require 5+ years of experience (something I can’t acquire in a short period by reading, and working onmy own). And there is also no shortage of ASP, .NET, C#, SQL Server, MFC, etc.. postings either.
Or maybe my resume just sucks.

Your resume just sucks. It’s an old debate: work experience or college experience.
No doubt, you can land a better and higher paying job than I can. But I’m more likely to get a job. Eh, I am employed.
I do hope that you find a job and one that you like.

Unforunately these jobs want 5+ years of experience and a 4 year degree. There is no debate, it’s an employer’s market and they want work experience AND college experience.

“There is no debate, it’s an employer’s market and they want work experience AND college experience.”
Right, right, of course they do. But perhaps I need to spell it out for you. 5+ years of experience and a four year degree will probably take you 9+ years. The old debate being, after the first four years, which is more likely to be employed: the person who worked for those four years or the person who “just” got out of college. Now, I understand that some people work all those years in college too, but that is also beside the point. Of course, the people who went through college are always more valuable in the end, because then they have the college degree and the work experience.

Or perhaps an age thing? (not intentionally sarcastic, coming from a female in the IT field)

Well your resume sucks!
First, you need a more colorful resume like mine. Second, your list of skills is minimal. You may not be the master of ASP, Javascript, COM, ATL, etc. but you still need to list some skills you have a good comfort in.. That’s whats gonna get you into the interview. If recruiters are getting hundreds of resumes and all yours say is C/C++/PHP then obviuously they are goin to disregard yours quickly.
Also, you need to get into the .NET scene… ASP.NET and c#.. Thats where the money’s at…
