Ramblings and Gnome

Wow, it’s been like a month since I’ve updated. Work takes up too much of my spare time.

Arghh. Of course when I feel like posting, my webhost is down. I don’t know how they get away with their uptime claims, but whatever. It’s dirt cheap. And it’s not mission critical or anything.

Anyways.. a couple of months ago I posted about RedHat as a desktop. I was pretty happy then, and I’m even happier now. I got a new computer at work, and decided to go back to Gentoo.. umm.. just because. I decided was going to go with Gnome, and forge KDE (-kde in my use flags), and between the low latency scheduler and the the preemptible kernel performace seems pretty good. Not quite as instantaneous as Windows (but the video card probably isn’t so hot either). And maybe partially because of Gnome 2.4. Seems a little quicker. But after tweaking it a bit, I’m pretty damn happy.

OK.. I was going to post a picture, but some permission stuff is screwing up my picture gallery.. doh.. anyways. I quite happy with my Gentoo workstation running Gnome with Evolution, Epiphany and Ximian OpenOffice. It look good, and has a good cohesive feel and runs well. I got to thinking that I could actually run it exclusively, and being able to make that statement means the developers have come a long way.

The only things that could use some work would be the whole copy/cut/paste thing. Some standardization would be great. And fonts. That needs to get worked out, and there needs to be some good looking fonts. And obviously it’s not fit for anbody’s mom yet, there is still too much tweaking in the setup phase. Anyways, Gentoo rocks, Gnome rocks, and VIM rocks.
