My Laptop

I’ve been complaining to those who cared (and my girlfriend, not that she doesn’t care but it doesn’t really affect her) that I was about/at least a week behind schedule on my Palm AIM client.

What does this have to do with “My Laptop?”

Well.. I’m now going to fall further behind because it suffered a near fatal hardware failure. At the very least the video card is dead. How did it die? I’m not blaming anybody but weeks ago one of my coworkers set his coffee behind my laptop, and another one knocked it over. I thought I’d gotten lucky, but I guess I’ve just been living on borrowed time.

I started to take it apart last night to take a look but turned around after I couldn’t figure out what to unscrew next and realizing there were too many different screws to mentally keep track of. I’ll probably download the service manual, and take it apart this weekend to see it is just isolated to the video card. If it is I’ll try to get a second-hand one off of http://www.x1000forums.com from those who’ve upgraded theirs. In the worse case scenario, it would be time for a new laptop. And right after I’d convinced myself I didn’t need one.

Until I can get my laptop (my only Windows machine) repaired or replaced, I’ve got a P3-500 that I could probably throw NT4 on. NT4 because it’ll run what I need, I don’t have my 2000 CDs with me, and XP won’t like being installed on my laptop and this random machine. I suppose I could try something like VMware on my main Linux workstation. Or not .. VMWare is $$$, and plex86 has changed their goals. Maybe Wine or Bochs will be sufficient.
