We’re Back …
The site was down for a couple of hours (a little less than a day) because I was moving the site. I could have made the move seamless, but I was lazy and I figured my two viewers wouldn’t notice (haha).
Anyways.. the reason for the move: I was having issues with my previous host. Besides the crappy uptime (it has been good lately though but my servers on my DSL had better uptime), they were moving in a direction that I was not happy about. They were obviously moving towards a less technical crowd when they suspended my account last week for hosting a .exe file. Because it was a potential copyright violation.
And when I tried to explain to them that I had written that particular program, they asked what it did. I explained to them that it was a packet sniffer, they replied that they could be used for illegal purposes and nobody besides network security professionals and “the Law” should have them and asked me to remove the file.
It is obviously a business decision on their part to target the lowest common denominator. I’m sure it saves them support costs be simply banning all .mp3’s, .avi’s, .exe’s, etc. They obviously aren’t looking for my business (not that I was paying them much so they won’t mind me leaving either). Of course, you get what you pay for and all that jazz. Of course I had a hard time believing that the techs I interacted acted with are more qualified to admin the server than myself.
Hopefully this move will bring greater performance and reliability.
