Impression of South Korea (After One Hour at the Airport)

  • The airport “gift” shops seem to only carry expensive name brands.
  • Lots of digital cameras, dictionaries, MP3 players and media players. iPods look like they have a healthy amount of shelf space.
  • Gift shops only seem to have cultural items that reflect traditional culture. I was looking for something that reflects modern culture, like snacks and drinks with Starcraft emblazoned on them.
  • With a culture of computer games, I kinda expected more opportunities for people waiting. I was expecting sprawling internet cafes. Saw one tiny free one for transfer passengers that had like 3 working computers.
  • Gift shops also have a lot of liquor and cigarettes.
  • And kimchee.
  • My GSM phone doesn’t seem to work here, but knew that it was mostly (if not entirely) CDMA here.

The gift shops are a little disappointing. Ultimately there isn’t anything here I couldn’t get in the US. I was really hoping to pick up some Blizzard random crap for my brother. I’ll add pictures (of the foggy airport) later.
