Downtime

Nothing like your server going down a couple of times to motivate you to touch up your backups.

I have automated backups running that back up all the users data (once a week currently). Unfortunately, I didn’t have backups of the configuration (stuff in /etc). Certainly, I could have done with out, but it would sure be nice to have that too. So I’ve done a quick copy of the directory for now before I integrate it into my backup scripts.

Having lost a harddrive recently and experiencing the odd issues with my server the last couple of days, I comforted by the piece of mind my automated backups have provided for me. I’m averaging probably one dead harddrive a year, but this last one though very annoying really didn’t do any damage (besides time). I recommend backups for everybody.

And as for my “users” who had to deal with the hours of downtime. Please contact be for your refund as specified in your SLA. Right. ;)

Anyways. Sh*t happens. Could’ve been worse. Now I just need to figure out a way to back up my backups to an offsite location.
