Walking to Work

I’ve been in Shanghai for the last couple of weeks for work. And as part of that experience, I’ve been walking to work. I wouldn’t say like a local because I don’t take the bus or the subway.

I find I enjoy walking to work. At least in a foreign country. Walking to work every morning, I can see the office workers bustling in the streets, the shop owners opening their shops, parents playing with their younger children, delivery people bicycling around, and street vendors setting up.

I don’t walk back as much at night. But the walk at night is also interesting because it is similar but different. The vendors selling produce and food are all out, while others are closing up for the day.

It gives you a glimpse into the everyday person’s life. And from that glimpse you wonder, “How far does the vendor have to roll his cart/stand each time?”, “How much can he earn, is it a livable wage?”, “How can the guy that sells a bushel of vegetables in the evening live?”.

It’s an interesting perspective. A little different than a bus tour or visiting the tourist attractions.

The only problem is that it has been freezing.
