Lost A Harddrive

I lost a harddrive in my NAS earlier this week. Luckily it is running RAID5, so I haven’t suffered any data loss (yet). I ordered and just received the drives today (I ordered an extra, so next time I won’t have to wait). I just finished replacing the drive, and the array is resyncing.

So far, it still seems that I lose about a harddrive a year. I mentioned previously that “I hope to have my offsite mirror up before I suffer a harddrive failure in my NAS.” Oops. That didn’t quite happen. Of course, as soon as I started seeing SMART errors on drive 2, I quickly started setting up offsite backups. They didn’t quite finish before drive 2 died, so there is still work to do (and risk).

I seem to have gotten more paranoid over the years, and I find myself uncomfortable with just RAID5. Maybe my data has grown more valuable over the years. RAID6? Maybe I’ll be more comfortable after I get my remote backups up (and up to date).

I guess the positive to come out of the drive loss is that it prompted me to set up my offsite backups. With every failure, my infrastructure becomes more robust. ;)
