iPhone 2.0

So the latest firmware came out. And the latest unlocking software came out to support it. So I upgraded my iPhone since I was bored.

The two hardware features of the new iPhone 3G are obviously HSDPA support and GPS support. I don’t get either from the software update (obviously), but I had read the location support had improved even for first gen users.

So I popped into Google Maps and *bam* it practically zooms in on my apartment. I was completely blown away. I tried it in a couple of other places with pretty similar results. Wow, I was impressed (still am to some degree I guess). It really tempered the urge to upgrade.

I started to wonder how they could get that level of precision. Then I thought, “Hrmm, the little circle on the map looks to be about the range of someone’s access point.” So I went into settings, disabled WiFi, and went back to Google Maps. This time, I got the same big circle I was used to. So the improved precision comes from better WiFi location data. Oh well, but it is still more useful now than it was before.

Anyways, apps are cool, there are some nifty things in there. A lot of garbage as well.
