O Canada!

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

I remember visiting Canada decades ago. We went to Lake Victoria, and Banff. It was a beautiful place. The dollar was much stronger back then.
Guess we can still visit China, south east Asia, and South America for relatively cheap.

How’d they get my playlist?

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

There are two restaurants that I’ve been to that always leave me wondering about their music selection. They just happen to play they same eclectic mix of 70s/80s/90s pop that I collected in college. Of course, sometimes they play things I’ve never heard of. And sometimes when that happens, I go, “Oh, that’s a good [...]

Is this what they call “Context Sensitive Ads”?

Seoul-ful Thoughts

Saturday, June 9th, 2007

Some random bullets about Korea:

Seoul seems to have struck a decent balance between industry/economy and ecology. There are many trees everywhere and lots of green in general. While driving in from the airport, I commented that it reminded me a bit of Hawaii. From listening to the guides on the tours, it seems like feng [...]

Word Fads

Friday, May 18th, 2007

I’m amused by word fads. Words and phrases go in and out of style over time. Clearly this is nothing new.
The word fad that amuses me currently is “uncanny valley“. Uncanny valley is not a new phrase. I probably first heard of it during the rise of CGI in film. Maybe it was around the [...]

More Google Video

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

I’d posted previously about how I enjoy the engEdu series of videos that Google make available on Google Video. Kind of like on demand lectures. Like school but without having to sleep through uninteresting lectures. Or having to wake up early.
It turns out Google has another series of videos. The engEdu series is usually technical. [...]

Plastic Annoyance

Monday, April 9th, 2007

One little annoyance of mine that has been bugging me more lately is how some plastics wear away and become smooth. And once they become smooth, they feel greasy. This most commonly happens with things you use with your hands. Like keyboards, mice, etc.
But the primary reason this is bugging me more lately is because [...]

Walking to Work

Sunday, March 18th, 2007

I’ve been in Shanghai for the last couple of weeks for work. And as part of that experience, I’ve been walking to work. I wouldn’t say like a local because I don’t take the bus or the subway.
I find I enjoy walking to work. At least in a foreign country. Walking to work every morning, [...]

As I Was Walking to Work

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

… in the morning (of course), I saw a little boy (under 10) taking a leak on the side of the road while waiting for the bus with his mom. I guess maybe that is perfectly normal here. But it shows that China still has a little ways to go before the 2008 Olympics.
I can [...]

Funny Money

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

When we were in China, one of the little things that drove me crazy was the sizes of the currency (the bills). They came in all sorts of sizes and keeping them sorted and in a nice stack was difficult. I couldn’t understand why they would make them all different sizes. I guess if you [...]
